Dance Lessons for Life
Dance means something different to everyone; what comes to your mind? Fred Astaire twirling Ginger Rogers? Michael Jackson doing the Moonwalk? So You Think You Can Dance, perhaps? Whether you are a seasoned dancer, or just like to do the Funky Chicken at your friend’s wedding, dance in any form provides benefits for both the body and brain. In other cultures, dance has been used for its healing purposes to fight illness, express powerful emotions and pass on history from generation to generation. Likewise, dance in the Western world is more than just an aerobic exercise that will keep your body lean and fit. Partner dance, for example, requires concentration, sensitivity and an equal distribution of power between two people. Research has proven that couples who take dance lessons together are more aware of how to recognize non-verbal cues and better able to express and respond to each other’s body language. Single? Don’t worry, you don’t need a dance partner. Ballroom dance is a social event where people switch partners often, guaranteeing you meet new people. Partner dance lessons are also ideal after a long day of work and mundane activities. The endorphins that are released while dancing cause people to feel more happy and positive on a daily basis. The combination of passionate music, expressive movement and human interaction releases tension built up in the muscles while improving the body’s circulatory and respiratory systems. Dancing really does give the treadmill a run for its money! Children are never too young to start, either. Young people today are growing up in a plugged-in world, in which technology such as the internet and video games limit face to face communication. Ballroom dance teaches team building and encourages a healthy body image. The shyest child will become more expressive, self-confident and have an increased awareness of social graces such as when to lead and when to follow. Most importantly, partner lessons are fun. Rather than joining a gym and feeling like a hamster on a wheel, why not feed your heart and mind, improve your overall lifestyle and just DANCE!!!
Three Things Every Parent Should Know Before Choosing a Dance School
1. WHAT IS THE SIZE OF THE CLASS?
If the dance class has fewer students in it each child will receive more personalized attention, learn more and have more fun. With younger students it is easier for a teacher to maintain control over the class and make sure each student understands the concepts and instructions. Our smaller class sizes make sure that no fundamental concepts are being missed. A smaller class size also allows our teachers to ensure that students are not developing bad habits or improper technique.
Our studio limits all of our classes (ages 6 and up) to a maximum of just 12 students per class. With our kindergarten dance classes (ages 3 – 5) we limit all of our classes to a maximum of just 8 students per class.
2. WHAT ARE THE “EXTRAS” REQUIRED FOR THE YEAR END SHOW?
Most studios 0nly have one dance numbers per class, we offer 2 per class so that during the recital you are able to see your child more often. Most studios put on a year end show in a professional theatre. Students that perform in the show must have a costume for their dance number. Some studios may require parents to sew their child’s costumes, or pay extra and the parents must find their own seamstress to do the sewing. This can be inconvenient and frustrating for parents who are busy or can’t sew. Most studios charge a fee for their children at rehearsal time we do not charge extra.
Our studios use our own “affordable” professional seamstress to sew and alter the costumes, so parents do not have to worry about any costume hassles. This way you as a parent will not be faced with any extra work or expenses.
3. CAN I GET IMMEDIATE ASSISTANCE AND CUSTOMER SERVICE?
In many studios the teacher or the studio owner conducts classes and does the administration. By trying to do two jobs at once, the class may suffer as the teacher has to use class time for customer service issues, or the studio may have no customer service available if the teacher is in a class. To have a good experience it is important to choose a studio that can assist you with details like costumes or schedules, even if a teacher is occupied in a class. Our studios have office staff on hand during all regular class times, so you can get immediate assistance.
